Experience 14. A day of two castles. 10 June
Stresa behind us, we spent most of the day on the bus traveling from west to east....moving ever closer to Venezia (sometimes referred to as Venice). Diversion for the day being a stop at Sirmione ... Where large numbers of Sunday tourists enjoyed a trip around the castle, a walk, a swim and a gelato. The town is set on a very narrow peninsula into lake Garda, the castle dominates the approaches from land and sea.
Our days destination was Castelbrando which dominates the surrounds of Cison de Valmarino and the approaches through the alps from Austria beyond. The castle is on high with no direct access for motorized transport apart from a funicular that could move about ten at a crush. Once inside the castle there were stairs and hallways leading in all sorts of directions. Before drinks and dinner we had a tour of the castle which helped with ones bearings. The castle was converted into a hotel in the nineties, aside from rooms, dining and conference facitilies there was a museum of armor and weaponry from the past and dungeons still intact...if not In operation.
It was a long journey so after dinner a quiet drink and rest before Venezia!
