From Tuscany to Umbria

Experience 26. Worlds Champion Gelato. San Gimignano. 17 June.

First and foremost this was a traveling day but we managed a couple of town trips along the way.

San Gimignano was another walled town with a bit of history. Most notably the town piazza included a shop proclaiming that they were the providers of Gelato that was a world champion. Cheryle decided this was a good time for a triple decker with included tiramisu, notchello and passion fruit. I had pistachio...because I am boring...but it is my favourite.

There was a medieval celebration of sorts going on in the town with locals dressed in costume, a procession through the streets and a show going on which we think included an archery tournament...on the basis of all the blokes with quivers. Unfortunately the show was pay for view and we were on a timetable that didn't allow for an extended stay. Worthy of note was a the lady in waiting to a noble woman in the procession talking on her mobile phone...kind of broke the illusion somewhat.

Experience 27. Scorching in Siena. Siena. 17 June.

By the time we got to Siena the day had turned A scorching 37 degrees. We had a long walk into the town centre from the bus parking area and it was a bit of a wilt quite frankly. How some of the older tour members were coping I have no idea.

We stopped for lunch on the main square where they annually hold these crazy horse races. The place is a typical piazza, loads of hard surfaces and hard edges. What it is like with loads of horses careering about the place is hard to imagine...all they do is put a bit of soil and sawdust on the ground.

We did a bit of shopping but to be honest In the heat I not sure that even Cheryle's heart was in it...and that is saying quite a bit in my view.
